14 People, 14 Asthma Cures: An Introduction

While the number of asthmatics in the U.S. tripled in the last 30 years, Western medicine’s message regarding treatment remains the same: “There is no cure for asthma.”

However, asthmatics around the world who are exhausted from their relentless symptoms and tired of Western medicine’s dogma are coming to an entirely different conclusion.

My journey to finding a cure for asthma began in a $30 hotel room in Panama City, Panama. My then-boyfriend (now husband), who had lived with asthma since the age of six, was experiencing severe and seemingly worsening asthma symptoms. As a fluke, we searched online for “asthma cures.” We found asthmastory.com, a comprehensive website created by Jim Quinlan detailing his journey from near-fatal asthma attack to discovering that his asthma was caused by prolific bacteria that could be and ultimately was cured with antibiotics. Jim had not used his inhaler or any asthma medication in 17 years.

We were hopeful.

Fast-forward four months. We were in David’s hometown in Spain. David’s asthma symptoms were taking him from a person fond of hiking and biking up mountains to a person who was finding simple daily tasks unbearable.

We went to the doctor.

As David was explaining why he came in, he also mentioned the possibility of his asthma being caused by bacteria. David’s doctor did what many Western doctors described within these 14 stories did: she laughed.

David left with a prescription for a pile of drugs.

The drug pile provided a much-needed temporary reprieve, but as many asthmatics and those who love them know, the reprieve is short-lived and the possibility of future suffering under Western medical care is practically a guarantee. A few months later, David went to a homeopath that had cured a childhood friend of asthma.

We were hopeful again.

But two visits and six months later, David believed his asthma was the worst it had ever been. Tasks that no one would consider exertion were triggering asthmatic symptoms in David: making breakfast, taking a three-block walk down the street, cutting a watermelon.

His symptoms showed zero mercy. There were days he required his asthma inhaler a dozen times or more. Getting a full night’s sleep was an impossibility.

It scares me to think how dangerously close I was to accepting that David’s inability to breathe normally numerous times daily was simply part of our routine, not something that needed immediate and substantial attention. It was after he left to go to work on a particularly asthmatic morning that I thought of the words of a woman I had interviewed for my website, thedeliciousday.com, regarding her journey from drug addict to yogini. I had asked her if there was anything anyone could have done for her in the depths of her addiction. Her response was, “Get me to a doctor.”

Finding an Eastern medical doctor in an area of the world that speaks Catalan and Spanish when you speak English fluently and Spanish like a decently smart one-and-a-half-year-old was not easy. Eventually, I found a place in Barcelona that was patient enough to put up with both my questions and my Spanish.

As I was searching for doctors, I was also doing the only other thing I thought I could do to help David: looking for others who would be willing to share their stories on how they cured themselves of asthma. Writing about people who have cured themselves of diseases Western medicine claims are not curable is something dear to my heart, and as such, I have written rather extensively on topic on The Delicious Day. I thought that if I could collect enough stories on others who have cured asthma, I could not only help David to find his road to recovery, but I could provide others like David with inspiration for finding theirs.

What I found in preparing this book is something I always suspected: David is not alone in his journey towards curing his asthma — not even close. David, from his small town in Catalonia, is now walking on a path that many around the world are walking with him. David had the courage to start this journey, and like the people described within, he has the conviction to finish it. David’s story to recovery, also like all the stories within, is very unique to him with the exception of one commonality among all: he and these people all believe that living a life without suffering with asthma is possible. All the people whose stories are shared within — regardless of the cause of their asthma or the number of years they had it or everything doctors had ever told them — knew there was a life without asthma waiting for them, and they went out and got it.

From that commonality, the stories diverge greatly. Asthma is a condition in which a number of different possible triggers result in an over-reactive airway and subsequent difficulty in breathing. The trigger that causes asthma symptoms in one asthmatic may have no effect on another. As there are endless combinations of physiological, psychological, dietary and lifestyle triggers that can cause asthma symptoms, there are also, as shown within, numerous methods in which to cure it.

The Western medical approach to asthma is to prescribe a lifetime of medication to lessen the frequency and severity of asthmatic symptoms. This approach has undoubtedly saved the lives of countless people, but it does nothing to cure or completely eliminate the problem.

That is where the stories of these 14 people come in.

These 14 approaches to healing didn’t lessen the frequency or severity of asthmatic symptoms – they completely eliminated them – and not just for hours or days but for months, years and decades.

The cures these people used to arrive at a life without asthma are unique to each individual and involved many things, including lifestyle, diet and exercise changes. Some needed to work with unresolved grief. Others used some very unconventional yet highly effective alternative therapies. Some took days, months or years to cure themselves; one woman I spoke to was cured in 90 minutes.

These people come from four different nations on three different continents. Four are doctors. One is a woman who was cured as a teenager. Another is a mother who cured both her children. Many lived the vast majority of their lives with asthma until they found a cure as adults. Others lived decades without asthma and when suddenly diagnosed set out on a path to find a cure. Some used only one treatment to cure themselves; for others, it was a process of trial and error (and more error). Regardless of their individual journeys, they all arrived at the same destination: a life without the thought of or the need for asthma medication.
