Dr. Fred Pescatore is a MD who has helped patients not only drastically reduce their asthma symptoms but cure their asthma. As Dr. Pescatore writes about in his book, The Allergy and Asthma Cure, asthma is a condition of internal inflammation. If you can reduce the inflammation you can reduce and even cure asthma. I chatted with Dr. Pescatore the other day about the key tenants of the program uses to help heal and cure many asthmatics.

This is a bit of what he had to say:

What is the relationship between asthma and allergies?

Asthma symptoms can happen without any kind of allergic reaction, but you can also get asthma symptoms from being allergic to something.

Why is it that external factors such as pollution, smoke, perfume, animals or mold can cause asthma symptoms but diet can reduce or cure asthma symptoms?

If you clean up your body’s internal environment with diet and supplements you reduce internal inflammation and the external environment will not bother you as much. When there is less inflammation in

your body you will be much less impacted by external factors. However, if your internal body is in a constant state of inflammation, then when external stimuli come along the body will react more severely because of its weakened state.

What are the first steps in cleaning up your body’s internal environment?

There is not a pill in the world that will fix you if you do not fix your diet. As I write about in my book, The Allergy and Asthma Cure, changing to a no sugar, no yeast and no dairy diet is essential for asthmatics.

Gluten and wheat are also awful because we have damaged the food supply so much that wheat does not even look like the wheat that was eaten fifty years ago. With every patient I do a food sensitivity test with them. If they come up to be gluten allergic or wheat allergic then I eliminate it from their diet. I always also eliminate foods that turn to sugar in the body such as white bread or white pasta.

People should eat fresh local seasonal food which will also lead to a decrease in inflammation. We are a part of our environment which is why you should eat locally. What is in the soil where you live is what you need and what your body responds to. If you try to change that it will create an inflammatory response. If you want a pineapple go to Hawaii and eat one.

It is then a matter of taking the right nutritional supplements to cleanse toxins out of your body. These supplements include things like Pycnogenol® (pic-noj-en-all), which is a French maritime pine bark extract, as well as Dr. Ohhiras probioitcs, grapefruit seed extract and vitamin C. It is all about reducing inflammation. If you can reduce inflammation you are going to see a lot of significant health improvements.

There are a lot of studies that show that if you give someone that has exercise-induced asthma 3000 milligrams of vitamin C just 30 minutes before they exercise, they will not get asthma.

How do asthmatics know what are the best supplements in helping them reduce their asthma symptoms and cure their asthma?

That is always a hard question. There are a lot of supplements with a lot of research behind them like Pycnogenol® and vitamin C. A study, published in Volume 53 of Panminerva Medica, found that the natural supplement Pycnogenol improved control of allergic asthma, reducing night awakenings caused by asthma symptoms by nearly 50 percent. Asthma patients who used Pycnogenol experienced reduced dependence on inhalation corticosteroid (ICS), which is commonly administered through an inhaler, and required less visits to a doctor due to asthma symptoms.

I do not think people should go to the store and believe what the clerk tells you to take. People need to know how to choose the right brand after they have done their research. There are very good and very bad versions of supplements. Most brands that are made in the US, Europe or Japan are typically very highly standardized extracts because they have to be.

Unfortunately a lot of the production is going to China and there are a lot of quality control issues with that. Nature’s Way is a good company. If it is cheap you are probably getting a cheap ingredient. Muscle testing can be a more accurate test for determining what supplements will work and which will not.

How long will it take an asthmatic to feel better once they change their diet and start taking the supplements they need?

They will be better within two to three weeks. They are not cured but they are better. With asthma patients that work on reducing their internal inflammation with diet and supplements they will see significant changes in six months and within their next full year they will likely not need their asthma medication anymore.

You have written about the dangerous side effects of asthma medication. Could you talk about that a little bit?

Bone loss and diabetes are probably the biggest potential side effects of asthma medication and then there are dependency issues where your body can no longer live without the steroids. Once your body is addicted to the medications you can’t get yourself off it.

What resources do you recommend for asthmatics that are looking for a medical professional to help

them cure their asthma naturally?

They should see ACAM.org, IAACN or the CNS Group. They should also take the ALCAT food sensitivity test. It is inexpensive, they can order it online and do it at home. Otherwise the only other way to determine the foods you are sensitive to is through eliminating them one by one from your diet and that can take a very long time.

What are your thoughts on how the majority of Western medicine treats asthma and asthmatics?

Western medicine does not want to get to the underlying cause of any issue including asthma. It is easy to take five minutes to write out a prescription and that is really all they care about. Western medicine is a total medical and pharmaceutical model. It works perfectly for the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance companies, but it does not really work for the patient.

However, I always put the blame on pharmaceutical companies or insurance companies but a lot of people do not want to take care of themselves either. I am lucky as I get people who come to me who want to get better. If you are a conventional medical doctor you are going to get very few of these patients. A lot of people just want to get the drugs. It is how we taught patients how to act.
